What is Botox?

Botox (botulinum toxin) is a naturally occurring protein that is used to treat wrinkles and lines on the skin. Injected directly into specific muscles in the face it blocks signals between the nerve and the muscle. This minimises the wrinkling of the skin as the face moves naturally.

Botox is usually used in the upper third of the face and can help remove wrinkles around the eyes, between the brows and on the forehead. It is not a permanent solution as it usually lasts for around 3 or 4 months. As a result, Botox is a procedure most people have regularly, arranging appointments over a number of months.

There are certain instances when Botox cannot be carried out. Mr Khan considers all personal circumstances. As listed on the NHS website, you may not be able to have the treatment if you have a skin infection or are unwell in any way.

A neuromuscular condition like myasthenia gravis may also prevent you from having Botox. It is also important to advise if you are taking medicines or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
